What do averageness and perfection have in common? No, it’s not that “we’re all perfectly imperfect”. True as it may be, let’s not pretend that that sentiment resonates with us enough to keep us from feeling self-doubt. As far as your brain is concerned, averageness and perfection have everything in common, because perfection has become the new normal. With a daily attack of award ceremonies, best-sellers, and absolutely useless top 10 lists, many of our perceptions of excellence have widened enough to trick us into thinking that excellence is everywhere. The more common excellence is, the less tolerance there is for mediocrity. So how can we get around this?
